    10. Liechtenstein

When World War One broke out the principality declared itself neutral however more than a hundred of its men volunteered for the Austrian Army. Some 27 of these, including Liechtenstein Prince Heinrich who served as a major in the Kuk's Dragoons in Russia in 1915, died under the Austrian flag. Avoiding being ensnarled in World War One, Liechtenstein ended its treaty with Austria and entered its current trade union with Switzerland in 1923. Hitler had designs to merge the Germanic Liechtensteiners on his border into his enlarged Third Reich but no invasion took place

        • I am getting some conflicting info from Wiki (no surprises there right?).
According to this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partici...in_World_War_I San Marino declared war on Austria-Hungary on June 3, 1915. Andorra is listed as a participant on the Entente side (sorry R Evans). Yet from the articles on the countries it certainly sounds like they remained neutral, even if might have favoured one side over the other.

Does anyone know what the real deal would be?

          Thanks.

            9. Paraguay

Suprisingly (to me anyways) fewer countries in South America remained neutral than I originally suspected. Influenced by Portugal perhaps?

Judging by that list in wiki, we may have to do an adjustment, so here's an alternative to either San Marino or Andorra, as I assume Paraguay is for the other.

7a. Albania it declared independence of the Ottoman empire in 1912.

              • Canuckster,
in spite of your confusing numbering I think you have provided the thirteenth item of a baker's dozen,
so it is up to you to come up with the theme for a new dozen

You may not be interested in War, but War is interested in You - Leon Trotski, June 1919.

I'm note sure what happened there . Let's blame it on the Canadian educational system.

The class of ship doesn't matter Aaron. I was just hoping to hear about various ships which would have interesting stories behind them...and the HMAS Sydney definately qualifies in that !

This could possibly be the most interesting naval story of WW1 as well as contain the oddest cast of characters. The African Queen may have been loosely based on the Mimi & Toutou. I really need to get one of the books available on the subject.
