I'm starting to get in over my head here Brod but I looked up the effects of tear gas for riot control. It can cause death due to chemical burns to throat and lungs if exposed to it for an extended amount of time or to high dosages. I have no idea what sort of concentrations they may have used at Bolimov. It's all moot anyways as it was too cold then for it to have any effect at all.

So maybe 2nd Ypres should be considered as the first 'effective' use of poison gas?

Nope, we should consider Bolimov the first known use - just because it is not as toxic as botulinum toxin, cyanide or nicotine does not mean it wasn't used as a poison. Curare is a poison but used primarily because it causes paralysis. If we're going to define the first effective use of anything as the first instance, then a whole lot of books need re-writing.

        • Well well well, relearn something occasionally. I had heard that the Germans were not the first to use gas during WWI many years ago, but had slipped into accepting the current wisdom that Bolimov was the first instance. Happy to stand corrected.
