I thanked him heartily for his report, remarking that the word 'alarm' was not to be found in the dictionary of a German officer.

                            5 The Battle of Bolimov

The Battle of Bolimov was an important battle in WWI as it was where poison gas was used first used on a large scale, but is often overlooked in favour of the first use of gas in the west.

Actually Terry I don't think that is quite correct. The gas used at Bolimov was xylyl bromide which is an irritant (ie tear gas).

The gas used at 2nd Ypres was chlorine which is a poison (causes death) and therefore it would mean Ypres was the first use of poison gas.

Actually, it is reasonably toxic, has effects other than a lachrymatory response, and the rat LD50 = 980mg/kg. This stuff can kill.
