  • The strange case of John Russell Markinson

    John Russell Markinson served in the Gallipoli Campaign , during the landings he was shot in the chest, near his heart, but survived his wound.
    Doctors could not remove the bullet, He returned to Surrey and became a hotel owner.
    Twenty years later he and his wife took a Mediterranean cruise, he wanted to revisit the battlefield and show his wife the place he took his wound. When they arrived at the sight of the battlefield the bullet shifted, and he died.
    Does that make his the last KIA of The Great War?

    No, because he did not die in action, unfortunately.

      But he was killed by a wound received in combat, much like so many veterans of the Vietnam War dying from AO.

        Not the same thing. If you live many years but eventually die from an old wound, you are not KIA. That category is rightfully reserved for those who fell in combat.

          You gotta admit, it is a strange story, he returns to the battlefield he was wounded on, the bullet he has carried in his chest next to his heart for 20 years shifts and kills him.
          He was a casualty of that battle, either way you cut it.

              Strange indeed, and I agree that he was a casualty in the end. It would have been a great plot for one of those Twilight Zone episodes.

                Yes it would, Or a WWI version of Saving Private Ryan....Imagine if that movie ended like this story did?
