  • How you going to keep them down on the farm

The WW! song 'How you going to keep them down on the farm after they've seen Paree' is well known. What I ham finding difficulty in finding is who wrote and/or first performed it.There is a suggestion it was Cab Calloway which maybe. A somewhat outlandish one is thjat it origiated in Australia (where it indeed was very popular at one time) and migrated to the USA. Anyone know for sure?

Song was U.S. copyrighted in 1919. Nora Bayes recorded it that same year and it became a hit reaching No. 2 on the U.S. song charts in March 1919. Like many WW1 songs it was still popular 22 years later when it was sung by military men worldwide.

There's another, more truthful version called "How you going to keep them down in the trenches after they've got VD!"

You've spent far too much time conducting "short arm" inspections.
