  • Protecting powers

In both World Wars protecting powers were neutral countries that had the responsibility of overseeing the welfare of the POWs of various nations. Thus the USA was until she entered the war the protecting power for POWs and other internees from Britain (and Empire), Serbia, Japan and San Marino and in Germany this task was performed by the US Ambassador in Berlin. Sweden appears to have performed the same role for German and Austro Hungarian POWs in Britain and the British Empire. Does anyone know who was the protecting power for France, Belgium, Italy, Russia and Roumania? Which country or countries looked after Bulgaria and Turkey?

I've now discovered that the USA was also the protecting power for Romania
