  • US to wants to seize 5 vessels carrying iranian oil.

    https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/...170317959.html

oil from iran to venezuela has been ok'd for seizure by a US court.

i wonder if this will finally spur iran to send it's larger combatants outside of home waters to escort oil shipments, or maybe even ask friendly nations to do the escorts on their behalf in an attempt to counter or prevent the US from attempting to seize them.

iran has 6, possibly 9 vessels that could theoretically do such escort missions.
3 alvand class frigates, 2 maybe 3 moje class frigates, 1 sina class frigate possibly the 2 bayandor class corvettes.

is the US betting on the threat being enough, or do you guys think the US would actually follow through with the seizures?

to be frank; if the US want these freighters they will get them.....aint nothing the Iranians or anyone else can do about it im afraid; unless they were transiting the Persian Gulf....

Certainly some form of military escort would make this somewhat harder but the end game is nailed on; how the optics would play out on a international stage would be key though.

Im sure the US would want it reported as if its part of UN mandated sanctions etc...

Maybe the US dont even need that pretence...

    Watch and wait i suppose

the US particularly with the current administration doesn't care if it has a pretense of UN support, but this could very easily be spun as imposing a blockade on VZ and thus an act of war...now what could either nation do?

      VZ? not much.
iran? a little bit more. increase offensive efforts against US troops in syria and iraq. seize ships heading to the US from the gulf, or even US owned ships in the gulf if there are any.
in the western hemisphere however both are completely toothless.

VZ also has about 9 ships that could conduct the escort mission, iran could hand off the convoy in/near morocco and the VZ navy could escort them the rest of the way back.

can they though?....when was the last time VZ navy even attempted such a feat; im unsure as to their ability to afford, sustain and co-ordinate such a manuveor?

I could well be wrong, but sounds a bit blue sky to me to expect them to do this. You cant sortie an entire fleet of vessels with a click of the fingers...would take weeks of build up whihc the US would notice quite quickly...

it will however be of interest to watch what develops...

you don't need to sortie a whole fleet or squadron. one maybe two would be enough. last time they did it is irrelevant, because they never had a need to do so. just like iran. aside from **** talking about putting iranian ships off the east coast they've never truly had a reason to send ships west of the suez canal.
can they afford it? sure with a loan from china or russia, both of which have shown themselves more than willing to prop up maduro.
