Having that range would have been real nice to take out Radio Hanoi in August of '72.

Good article, thx for posting. Pity about the section regarding the tumblehome hull design... trying to compare it to the dreadnoughts is not valid, imho. Especially when we see other articles(not this one) trying to line it up with the Borodino-class, that's just insane.

The navy spend enough money to buy 3 ships that according to the article have 1 specialised role? They could of fitted a 155mm on a existing hull and had a ship that could do NGFS.

Did i read correctly that the 155 guns can only fire the high end guided missile shell.

Are all USN ships ops rooms useing screens that are so exposed. Dont they get damged?

It has a gun system that can only fire one type of munition and doors that might come in handy for Special Ops? Doesn't that mean they would have to sail close to shore? They also have unproven radar and sonar suites. There is also a smaller VLS suite than on a Burke.

It will take ten years to get more munitions for the main guns and Billions to do so.

The author was very careful to give full credit to ex Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld for the major decisions on the ship.. I did not like Rummy before and I see no reason to change my mind!

The ship needs work. It is under gunned and has features that do not belong on a Blue Water Naval vessel. If it were up to me I would yank those 155 Guns off and replace them with the 8" guns they were testing years ago. I would also find a way to put some old fashioned radars on board.

I am afraid to ask if there are enough crew on the thing to repair battle damage!

It doesn't matter how many hands you have if they can't put into action procedures to deal with the scenario. If a ship is badly designed, or constructed poorly, damage control would make their job a lot harder.

As for costs of each round... why should that be an issue when the US Army was happy shooting countless $100,000+ Hellfire missiles at Hilux utes.

The round fired is actually a missile. The price of these missiles will be between $400,000 to $700,000 per round. They will buy between 1800 and 2200 LRAPS for the three projected ships. A Tomahawk has a range of 1000 miles and costs one million dollars per round. Gun fired missiles have been tried before, but did not work. I would be more impressed if the gun could also fire artillery shells.

They were going to have more than one missile for the guns, but increasing costs and decreasing number of ships to be bought meant they only designed one missile.

There are only 80 Launch tubes for missiles and no volume search radar. They are a bit vulnerable to enemy ships because of this.
