New Site - PLEASE READ

Hello All,
My name is Ashley and I am the one that moved the forum to its new hosting location. This was done for security reasons and try to keep the forum from going down every other day. I understand that the new forum looks very different from the old one but I promise almost everything you had before you still have it might just be in a different place.

Items that are gone due to a limitation of the new hosting/ forum update:
- Awards
- Flags

As I was going thought your posts I was able to fix a lot fo the issues you were listing. Below is kind of a running list of issues an what is fixed and what I am still working on.

Items that I have fixed from your comments:
- Smilie are now working.
- Color/Theme changes
- Signature are now showing up. (Here is how to edit them https://screencast.com/t/OJHzzhiV1)
- Ranking is now showing up.
- Private messaging is now working.

Some issues I am still working on are:
- Missing items from the Calendar
- Like button the posts is giving an error.

One other note I have seen a lot is theme/color related items. I know this is important to all of you but at the moment the most important thing was getting you back a functioning forum with as many features I can get you back from before.

Theme/color is something we can change but it the moment I do not have the time and resources to fix all of the issue and design the site. I did do some theme updates yesterday but it is very time consuming. Please just be patient with the forum as we get it back to as close as I can to what you had before.

If anyone has any issues that they are running in to please let me know in the post below. Please give me as much detail as possible .

  • German submarine penetrating US supercarrier screen?

My apologies for asking about some ancient history, I am just curious:
there is a story floating in Germany that during an exercise in the Carribean, German submarine U-24 managed to penetrate the protective screen of the USS Enterprise, launch a simulated torpedo attack against the carrier and emerge right next to the unsuspecting carrier. Several friends of mine have confirmed the stories from hearsay, claiming an admiral lost his job over this.
However, I have learnt that when it comes to exercises against the Americans, there are all sorts of outrageous and outright silly stories floating about the supposed superiority of the German military and/or the incompetence of US soldiers and sailors, so I am asking you guys for a point-of-view less tainted by nationalistic pride and certain complexes a people gets when loosing two world wars in a row. So, has anyone more on this supposed incident? Did it happen and if so, was it a big deal at all?

Given the amount of ASW coverage for a CVA is probably not as much as for say a CVS carrier group, it could have happened. Do you have an approximate date when this is supposed to have happened?

This is the origanal article I believe - it's in german:

      http://www.abendblatt.de/politik/aus...nd-machte.html

Article is written 8/8/2007 - found no date for the incident itself on superficial reading.

Well just run it through google translate it's not that difficult -

There's also a story there about the Falkland-war that the grogs around here should be able to verify or deny.

There's some serial numbers our german members may be able to comment upon.

Just wait for some more knowledgable replies, which will follow shortly

I've heard similar story's but not with a German sub. They were in test off the US West Coast and the sub in question was transported piggy back to the location do to lack of range. Then the part of surfacing in the middle of the group doing 30 knt's sounds sort of far fetched.

Carrier defensive scheme is not invincible, like everything else. Especially in peacetime, when crew is relaxed.I really don't know about German submarine, but I recall Australians Collins class sub "sunk" two USN subs, and almost got the carrier.

However if Type 206 was really in Caribbean (I always thought that sub was not really a deep sea ship) do you remember Chinese submarine in October 2006 "shadowing" just a few kilometres from the U.S. fleet (Kitty Hawk and her escort warships),which were undergoing exercises near Okinawa? It was discovered only after surfacing almost in the middle of the battle group.

It was Song class submarines, which (like almost any diesel electric, type 206 comprised) are extremely quiet and difficult to detect when running on electric motors.

I wouldn't be surprised, but don't know if the story is true or not.

Incidentally, the entire Type 206 Class (including those upgraded to 206A) have been decommissioned & half already scrapped.

They had a speed of 10 knots on the surface & 17 knots submerged.

There's a couple of stories I've heard which are simmilar, involving Dutch or Australian boats (As they're usually quite good it seems), and also there was that Chinese boat which rocked up next to the Kitty Hawk.

One webpage placed the exercise in 2001. Given that only one website would give the date, and even then only the year, I am inclined to take the story as a hoax, at the very least distorted beyond recognition.

It was an exercise. The Navy may not want to comment for security reasons, this doesn't mean that it was unaware of the foreign vessel.

In 1984 Soviet submarine K-314 surfaced under USS Kitty Hawk and both ships were damaged. So the story with the German submarine is very possible.

Every nation that has ever sent a submarine to take part in an exercise with a US carrier has "sunk" it . Canada has "sunk" so many US carriers that it's a wonder the USN hasn't given up building them.

Part of this is the artificiality of the exercise. Some is training objectives that may not be apparent to the person relating the story.

During exercises, successful attacks usually result in "out of action" periods for the target. Length of OOA will vary based on the exercise. If the result is that a vessel is sunk, it cannot attack or be attacked and may spend the time repositioning for another phase of the exercise.

Sometimes the Commanding Officer (CO) of an OOA ship may not agree that he's been "sunk". Sometimes a training opportunity (stalking a carrier would be a good one) is too good to pass up even if you are OOA. Sometimes the chance to cause a little mayhem is irresistable. Sometimes the sub really does get through.

I was standing on the bridge of a Canadian warship a long time ago during an exercise when one of the lookouts cried out, "Green flare bearing "X" (green flare is the visual signal from a sub that he has fired a torpedo).

The Officer of the Watch began issuing the series of orders that maneuver a ship in this situation. The CO stepped in, "Belay that! Green flare would have been fired by "Y" who has been OOA since "Z" and has been tracked."

We continued straight on our assigned mission.

So how does the story get told?
                            a. The sub's crew will say they sank a Canadian destroyer who obviously never saw them.
                            b. The story I told.
                            c. The story told by guys on the upper deck of my ship who never heard the reason we steamed on.
                            d. The story told by a different sub who was in the position we predicted "X" would be

German diesel-electrics are among the quietest submarines in the world, gong back to the Type XXI, which could run silent at 8 knots.

At the end of WWII, when ordered to surrender, a Type XXI commander ran an attack profile on the Allied anti-sub group before surfacing right under their guns, completely undetected - his way of showing them that he wasn't surrendering because of lack of ability to continue fighting.

America like the Type XXI so much that we adopted it as the hull form for the Nautilus, our first nuclear boat. Germany has continued and refined that expertise for the foreign weapons market.
