While Air Power is not my area of interest I can say this. The IAF is convinced that the Rafael brings many capabilities to the table that the IAF currently lacks. It fought tooth and nail against immense opposition to secure the Rafael. And it wants to at the minimum double the current order and ideally quadruple it.
The original intent was 126 aircraft with an option for 63 more. However due to botched up negotiations and delays spanning decades and political opposition an initial order of 36 was placed.

    It's a delta-canard, it's agile in a dog-fight, more so that non-delta-canards.

The Rafale is right on par with or even slightly exceeds the latest F-16's in every aspect of air combat. It is totally not a delta wing jet.

How realistic would BVR be in such a mountainous region?

I think if China and India are going at one another, the ROE are basically "nope".....

What’s the history with Exercise Indradhanush, there are claims the Indian Su-30MKI handed the Typhoons ass on a plate... especially in WVR on a few occasions. If true, why get the Rafale?

Call me unimpressed. Even a full shipment of 30 something Rafaels will not impact the situation much. Rafaels are delta winged and that means they are not agile in dogfights. I think the IAF will hold them back for use against Pakistan. The USAF used to fly F102's and F106's. They were also Delta winged and were supposed to fire radar guidance missiles from a distance at Soviet high altitude bombers.

India gets Rafale fighter jets from France, boosting its air force

By Brad Lendon and Manveena Suri, CNN

Updated 12:29 AM EDT, Thu July 30, 2020

Dehli, India (CNN)Five French-made jet fighters arrived in India on Wednesday, the first of 36 New Dehli ordered as it moves to upgrade its air force amid a spike in tensions with China.

"The Birds have landed safely in Ambala," Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted. "The touchdown of Rafale combat aircrafts in India marks the beginning of a new era in our military history."

The arrival of the jets in India comes about six weeks after Indian troops fought with Chinese soldiers along the Line of Actual Control, the disputed border between the two powers high in the Himalayas. Twenty Indians were killed in hand-to-hand combat, and fears linger of further hostilities.
