  • Tornado ADV F2 and F3

Had some questions about this British cold warrior
did the F2 have the ability to launch 4 x skyflash at 4 separate targets [ albeit with SARH guidance?] AT THE SAME TIME i.e can foxhunter radar direct missiles at 4 different targets at the same time ?
in other words like mig31 or F14 ?

F3 entered service in 1989 so all ADV in service before that were F2 ?

The Foxhunter radar was only capable of a single target engagement at a time; pretty much the same as most SARH systems in that period. The only(?) radar platform capable of multiple target engagement was the AWG-9 on the F-14 Tomcat; that is what pretty much set it apart from other interceptors.

      Thanks
But the mig31 can also able to engage 4 targets at once [ and its R33 were SARH too ]

wasn't the Phoenix a ARM Missile?

Yes, I forgot about the MiG-31.

The Phoenix wasn't strictly SARH. It required lock-on for launch, but then had its own radar for terminal guidance. I think it also received mid-course corrections. It was not an ARM (anti-radiation missile.)

So if F2 can only target one skyflash at w time what was the point of acquiring it when RAF already had like 150 phantoms?
better deal would be to purchase F14 from USA
