US Air Force unveils picture of new stealth bomber

Washington (AFP) - The US Air Force on Friday unveiled the first image of its next-generation bomber that will replace antique B-52s first developed during the Cold War.
The all-black plane has a distinctive, zigzagging shape and a super-low profile that will make it hard to spot on radar, and bears more than a passing resemblance to the Air Force's B-2 bomber, which is also made by Northrop Grumman.
    ...
The Pentagon in October announced Northrop as the winner of the contract to build the bomber in a decades-long program that will likely end up costing in excess of $100 billion.
The Air Force wants 100 of the warplanes, which will replace the ageing B-52s and the B-1 bombers that first saw action in the 1980s.

Interesting, so the B-2 design was as good as it gets in terms of utilising stealth. Thx for the post.

Nice to see some investment into the future. Old airframes can only take so many hours and they can only have so many life extensions.

Yeah, well the BUFF has had replacements announced many times. I wish they would simply modernize the old girl and resume production.

Probably not really practicable, but I am very sentimental about the Queen of the skies. I bet no other airframe has sent so many evil men to their graves. when they retire they should melt them down into sword blades.

The H models were updated not long ago. New engines, new electronics, avionics, etc. The original blue prints have to be around somewhere. So the R&D needed would be almost nil. Imagine how many B-52's you could build for $100 billion.

That $100 billion for 100 new bombers will probably turn into $100 Billion A COPY!

Looks like with F-35 finally arriving in production, they found another cash cow.

When was the last time the B-52 flew unescorted over a hostile SAM environment?

Good point! Who knows what the future will bring and we aren't getting any more B-2s.

I would not be surprised if the B-52 still carries on in service even after this one is produced and introduced. There will be low threat AA environments where it can work, and Arc Light is still a useful option.
