  • Iran Fires on US Drone

A Su-25 Frogfoot would not be my first choice for an air-to-air engagement even with a drone. You have to wonder why that aircraft was used. And then wonder how he missed.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Iranian attack aircraft fired at least twice at an unarmed U.S. drone conducting routine surveillance in international airspace over the Persian Gulf, the Pentagon said Thursday. The aircraft missed and the drone returned to base unharmed.

The shooting in the Gulf, which occurred just before 5 a.m. EDT on Nov. 1, was unprecedented, Pentagon press secretary George Little said. The incident was not disclosed sooner because the military does not discuss classified surveillance missions, but agreed to answer questions after news reports revealed the shooting.

Little said the drone was about 16 miles off the Iranian coast when the Russian-made SU-25 Frogfoot warplane intercepted it and opened fire. He said it was the first time an unmanned U.S. aircraft was shot at in international airspace over the Gulf.

Makes you want to skim the exact border of Iranian Airspace with a dozen drones.....each armed with a pair of sidewinders....eh?

As the fallout of the coverup of the Obama Regime starts getting exposed, we will start hearing more and more about their incompetence.

A drone should have been an easy target for any warplane. The RAF was easily able to take out V1 Buzz Bombers just by flying alongside them and tipping them over with the wingtips of their fighter aircraft. While such a maneuver would probably not work on a remotely controlled drone with the built in computer stability they contained, a missile or short well aimed burst from a machine gun would surely make toast of any drone.

I see the miss as a warning by Iran to Obama to back off on any attempts to make them abandon their nuclear weapon program.

The RAF fighters were flown by Brits. Iranian fighters are flown by.........'nuff said.

            WHY?

WHy was the news of this attack kept from the public until today?

Is there a 'cover-up' being conducted by the Obama administration to keep people in the dark about important or significant events?

Another four years we will have of this "mis-information" administration......

Only the Obama administration can call a terrorist attack, "Violence in the work place' when it happens on US soil, and not call an attack on our Embassy in foriegn lands a "terrorist attack"?

Yeah, we voted on Tuesday and must suffer through the next four years....

I'm not up on the particulars of the Iranian AF....is the SU-25 the 'slowest' fixed wing aircraft they have that is capable of AA combat (maybe the only thing available in the area)? Since a drone moves relatively slowly, wouldn't a slower aircraft have an easier time lining it up to shoot at with less experienced pilots as compared to a pro air force with zoomies?

I think that he missed the point of my example based upon WW2 when the Nazi used V-1 Buzz Bombs to attack London, an early example of a drone aircraft, and British fighter pilots sent to intercept and destroy them.

I don't believe he missed your point, but was making a knock against the quality of the Iranian Air Force.

No wonder Qatar and UAE would like to purchase Lockheed Martin’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile system. They have to live next door to Iran. The sale has not been approved but I suspect it will.

Perhaps Iran is anticipating a war, and testing their capabilities. Or rather, testing the capabilities of the drones.

What capabilities were they testing? How their pilots can't shoot straight? Whether an old-ass Soviet plane can catch up to a drone? If pressure waves from passing errant projectiles can startle a drone? Please, this is more embarrassing than North Korean missiles test.

If the yanks did start losing drones in air to air combat, how seriously would it be taken? If Iran get their act together and start knocking drones out of the sky for the sport of it, will the US send in manned fighters to defend them?
