  • Estonia's future MBT and fighter plane, what should it be?

Estonia doesn't have a MBT but their MoD has indicated they might buy some in 2020, what MBT do you think they should get, or do they even need one?

They have long expressed interest in the Gripen but haven't yet done anything, should they get that or would another plane be better suited?
Should they consider an attack helicopter instead?
    From wiki...
Estonian Air Force has embarked on an extensive program to upgrade and modernize airspace surveillance, making a number of significant purchases in recent years. The aim is to fully integrate with the NATO Integrated Air Defense System providing airspace surveillance with full national radar coverage and real-time reporting for the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission.
A couple of links to show what current situation they are in.

We all know who their planned adversary is. They are also a NATO country, which helps immensely. Estonia has too small a land area for fighters to really be effective. Besides, they can count (hopefully) on other air forces for air defense. They are a small country with a small population and not really wealthy. I'd go with a company (+) of whatever refurbished Western tank they can get cheaply (Abrams, Challenger 2, Leopard 2). An AH would work much better than a fighter. It would add added punch to their ground forces in the defense.

      2. Why buy something that they will not use ?

Why would they not use it if they ever get invaded?

The point of all military preparation for a country like Estonia is to up the ante for an attacker.

However little is always better than nothing. Invasion at no risk at all to the invader can by some be misconstrued as an active invitation.

If they are going to opt for modern Fighters, they need to start with a decent Trainer like the BaE Hawk. They can also do CAS.

Because they will be destroyed very quickly.

You always hear of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia being grouped together as "the Baltic republics", but how close are they actually in political and military terms and goals? With them all being very small, might they not be the perfect test case for integrated armed forces? They can't afford much individually, but together they might be able to put together an armoured battalion, a decent sized fighter squadron, an AH company, a flotilla of FAC, etc. Just a thought and I'm not knowledgeable to know the answer.

You might say that for every nation's defence expenditure.

Every nation defence has some goals. I hardly see the goals of Estonia.

Surely the preservation of the Estonian State. It might be claimed that Finland’s independence was preserved by her spirited defence in the Winter War and later.
