  • The best land based mobile SAM?

Ok guys, what is in your opinion the best land based mobile SAM system around, doesn't matter if it's on the back of a truck or a AFV.

Are the long ranged Patriots and Russian S-400 the best money can buy?

What about any shorter ranged weapons, are there systems that have proved to be highly effective against countermeasures etc?

starstreak HVM without a doubt. If It flies it dies, if it's got tracks it could be in trouble

Swedish RBS-90 MANPAD is a personal fav, good warhead, and very difficult for aircraft to defend against it, it is the successor to the RBS-70 in service with the ADF.

My vote is Patriot. Who else has a record that good? They sure as heck saved my bacon a few times.

I don't know about the best, but for my money, the Rapier is still a pretty good ADS.

Why am I not surprised that is a UK system? Firing units in the UK Army have been cut almost in half. Does that make it only half a good?

Well anyone is welcome to go out and buy the system, Like South Africa has, and hte US is considering buying it as a weapon for their AH-64's. However that door swings both ways, Look at any of the threads with "best ????" there's many times more Americans on here, and so US whatever gets bumped up the top.

However To defend the HVM, who doesn't like 3 Laser guided Exploding darts, Delivered at Mach 3.5? (apart from the Pilot on the receiving end)

A demonstration was conducted in September 1999 that showed the missile being used against an FV432 armoured personnel carrier, showing the missile's effectiveness as ground-to-ground weapon. Each sub-munition dart travelling at 1,250 m/s (2,800 mph) has comparable kinetic energy to a shell from a Bofors 40 mm gun and probably has sufficient energy to penetrate the front armour of an infantry fighting vehicle.
Even if the missile is Shite, the sheer amount of Technology would make any Tech head happy.

Right now it's in the development stage, but I really like what I've seen on the THOR weapons system. Basically Thor is a 4 pod Starstreak with both operator directed search and outside source control leaving the operator only actually having to fire the missiles. It is being optimized for both ground to air and ground to ground targets.

Above is the fireing unit. It can easily be towed and placed everywhere. The survailence radar and command centre is placed separately for protection.

I belive it during its prime downed more jets than the Patriot ever will. Combine the use of them in Vietnam, Syria and Egypt and they have killed quite a lot of aircraft during the years. I even belive there even is a case where a SA-2 was belived to have downed a F-14 during GW1.

                        Its however a crappy system...

Didn't it get an F-117 over Serbia too? or was that something else?

SA-3, but still a good catch even for that system, regardless of circumstances.

There are reasons to suspect Patriot sucks except its performance was distorted by misleading figures after the Gulf War. It's interception success probability against SCUDS went from 90% to 60% to something like 9% after a careful examination of the reports.
