  • The Marine Corps Gets a New Helicopter

We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fate but strong in will
To strive to seek to find and not to yield.

So it's a radical re-design of the existing system;interesting approach.

The power train weighs more than an entire Blackhawk: that's a heck of a comparison, although only about 70% of the comparable Russian system.

    Looks like a good deal.
Any man can hold his place when the bands play and women throw flowers; it is when the enemy presses close and metal shears through the ranks that one can acertain which are soldiers, and which are not.

They need them very soon most of the Marines CH-53e's are worn out from the last two wars there's only about 33 available for combat now out of a need for around 190 although they're now starting to fix the problems with their CH-53e's.

The Marines should look at the V-280 Valor to replace the UH-1 and AH-1 helicopters.

I don't see the Marines using the same airframe for Attack roles. For instance, a smaller fuselage diameter would be harder to hit and need less armor. There is another aircraft that competed with the Valour called the Defiant that could get the Transport or the Attack role.

Here I was thinking they got a single new helicopter of some existing design since they're usually last on the list to get big budget items...

They've been working on getting the kilo for at least 10 years. Good upgrade though, in more ways than just the sheer power. It needed 463L pallet capability.

The UH-1Y Venom has only been in service for 10 years.

The AH-1Z Viper has only been in service for 8 years.

I could see that airframe used as a vstol light attack bird. Just like I've been a strong advocate of an AV22 Ghost gunship. Put the chin turret with the 20mm from the cobra, and in the fuselage run a 40mm gun and a 12.7mm gatling or 2 x 7.62 gatling.

True but they can't keep up with the Osprey plus the U.S.M.C needs somethin g to augment the F-35 in the CAS role.
