  • Organisation of the Anglo-Saxon Army c900AD.

What is your opinion on its OOB/TOE? Core of elite infantry, supporting a shieldwall of Fyrd, and a few other lighter troops? A royal army of cavalry and mounted infantry? Or something inbetween?

Has ACG sunk so low that a basic army composition cannot be even guessed at?

Surely we still have Medieval scholars here?

Given that death taxes of nobles supplied 4 horses, 4 spears, 4 shields, 2 saddles, 2 suits of mail & 2 helmets iirc, 2 heavy cavalrymen and 2 mounted light infantry are the result of these duties. Given that the main foe of Britain at this time was the Vikings, having a mounted response seems appropriate. Given that Charlemagne had already began feudalism as we know it at the end of the 8th century, for the same reasons, except France's enemies were far greater in number and type, the same type of rapid reaction force should not be a surprise.

Did the horsemen at the time serve more as scouts and dismount to fight? Or did they actually ride into battle and fight on horseback?
"A foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had suffered so much for a cause, though that cause was, I believe, one of the worst for which a people ever fought, and one for which there was the least excuse." Ulysses S. Grant
