  • WTTA MOVIES OF 2004 - Gates of Fire

The book Gates of Fire is a fantastic historical novel, written from the point of view of a Greek survivor of the Battle of Thermopylae. For those who are not familiar with this battle, 300 Spartans (and some close friends) held out against hundreds of thousands of Persians, buying time for the rest of Greece to get their act together and whip the Persians' butts.

There is a movie being made based on the book.

Does anyone have any info on the movie, or opinions on the book, that they would like to share?

I bought the book in paperback when it first came out. It is a great read and the battle scenes were outstanding. This is one dude who will be present at that movie for sure. I did not know about a movie. Thanks for the report of it.

It looks like it will be at least a couple of years before it ever hits the screen, there has already been a lot of procrastinating.......by the time we see the "300 Spartans" it may look like "101 Dalmations".

First I've heard of the book or movie but I'm gonna have to find the book now. There was a movie made years ago about the battle of Thermopylae that was good and I'd like to see it again. Don't recall the name of it though.

I saw that old movie, too -- it was a very good one, but made in the 50s or 60s (if we have the same one in mind).

You will not be disappointed by the book -- it's excellent -- the best I have read in the past 15 months.

Would the movie be 300 Spartans? Was made in 1962 and I just bought the DVD.

Yes it was. Who was the star? Is that Victor Mature or one of those muscully (sp?) types from the old days?

After watching the 300 Spartans, one can only hope that a new movie on this subject will be released.
