  • 30 Years War documentaries?

    I've been having huge problems finding any actual 30 Years War documentaries on Youtube. The only pike and shot stuff I find is on the English Civil War.

    Surely there must be at least one documentary about the 30 Years War or at least a part of it. Are there any decent films portraying pike and shot action? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Regarding the movies, Captain Alatriste's battle scenes are about the only thing I can think of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTYuYxmICGo

      I have trouble finding good books as well. At least those that look at the high level political, economic, and social processes as they evolved throughout the period.

        The Last Valley

        2-3 out of 5 overall, as a bit dated and due to MC's dodgy accent...

          As for books, I have this, but yet to read it. Appears to have decent reviews.

          This I have read, and as an overview cannot be beaten in precise and concise info imho.

            I will point you towards this tome.

            Paul
            ‘Tis said his form is tiny, yet
            All human ills he can subdue,
            Or with a bauble or medal
            Can win mans heart for you;
            And many a blessing know to stew
            To make a megloamaniac bright;
            Give honour to the dainty Corse,
            The Pixie is a little shite.

              Bila Hora has some re-enactments:

                I've also had a difficult time finding material on The Thirty Years War. Pity since its a fascinating subject.

                  Concise sums it up, 94pp not counting appendix and index.

                  David Maland's Europe at War 1600-1650 is a more entertaining read IMO and also covers the war well in a short book.

                  The Wedgwood book is the standard introduction although I'm sure the scholarship is dated by now (true with Maland as well). Geoffrey Parker also has a book (pretty dry though)

                  not to mention the price!

                  This book was what got me interested in the 30YW in the first place, something that Dame Wedgwood failed to do:

                  Regarding documentaries on the war, unless you understand Spanish or German I doubt you will find much.

                    Some documentaries are subtitled. Do you know any good Spanish, Austrian, or German documentaries on the subject?

                      No but History Channel International used to show unsubtitled hour-long documentaries in Spanish during off hours, and at least one of them was on the Thirty Years War, or maybe just the 17th century. I think it was called El Canal de Historia. Now the H2 Channel is all about Redneck Aliens in Alaska.

                        YouTube seems to have some, if you go hunting in German. Haven't seen anything subtitled yet.

                          Obviously it serves only as an introduction, but for those who are looking for an entry book into the subject, and one that does not break the bank, it is 5 stars for that purpose .

                          Decent second hand copies are here for less than £3.00 inc p+p .

                            Perhaps the situation will improve after Infinity Ward releases Call of Duty: Thirty Years War.

                              Oh God, I wish. I would play the hell out of that. It would be equal parts hilarious and entertaining.
