    This is factually correct.

It is also true that Yassir Arafat, Saddam Hussein, Hafez Assad and many other previously secular Muslim leaders were quickly seen in numerous media bowing in the direction of Mecca and crying Allah 'uAkhbar during anti Israeli polemics following the 1979 Iranian coup by the Islamists.

Having no doubt of that, CK, but it is also a fact that YA also attended Christmas services in Jerusalem in his last several years.

He was a man of very little more than 'convenience' in terms of messages sent by his actions.

He'd do anything to get what he wanted.

More a matter of trying to gain public support rather than belief I would think. Take someone like Assad who showed no hesitation in slaughtering thousands upon thousands of Islamists when the Brotherhood challenged him. The massacre at Hama for example. Saddam Hussein did push religion after a point but I do think it was a matter of trying to gain wider support from Muslims. The Baath party started out as a clearly secular party. Like most politicians or leaders they seem to latch onto whatever will bring them a positive public response.

You see, I would try to be politically correct, if you showed something other than blatant disrespect and, to be blunt, stupidity.
To be fair, there have been some comments from the opposing side that might have been uncalled for, but you were being vitriolic and fairly nasty from page one before anyone had started debating you in the first place. Telling people to be civil demands that you yourself follow that convention- not to tell people that they have 11th century mindsets (after they made a joke, mind you), then on the second page pushing out a blanket statement calling all your opponents ignorant religious zealots who can't rationally debate, again, before anyone had even started really arguing.

Telling off the opposition to stop 'showing blatant disrespect' (then in the same sentence, calling them idiots. Very respectful that.) is more than a little hypocritical, isn't it? Again, this was a nice thread. Nastiness begets nastiness.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
