              9. One Shot -- One Kill

For nine months of 2008, while the Taliban were moving hard and fast throughout most of southern Afghanistan, a single platoon a Marine scout-snipers kept a district that straddled the road between Helmand and Kandahar provinces nearly chuch-mouse quiet. The judicious and accurate application of firepower tends to have that effect on people.

Well, what do you think happens at the other end of the scope? That's a big part of our problem vis a vis war: the mass delusion that it can ever be bloodless. It never is, and never will be.

But if it upsets delicate sensibilities, then by all means, I'll refrain from sharing with the congregation the more graphic aspects of combat. Then we can all maintain our happy video game mental image.

Well, don't want to get us off track, but I know darned well what happens on the other end of the scope (I know you know that). However, being opposed to seeing a photo of a guy holding a rifle seems a bit out of place on a forum about war.

Personally, I think every presidential address requesting war powers from Congress should be preceded by a public screeing of Born on the Fourth of July. Too many people pitch it like a walk in the sun and a free ride, followed by a nice parade. That's a misapprehension that we should disabuse ourselves of posthaste -- and I fear that our growing reliance on armed UAV's and other technilogocal gadgetry will only serve to deepen that misconception, not reverse it.

That wasn't educational but gratuitous, and you know it
