                      given name (sometimes) patronymic family name

                      Then suddenly the super formal Ivanov Semen Pavlovich and then back to the original pattern.

                          Early on he wasn't, but he proved very competent under the command of a Cavalry Corps, and due to early-War desperation, he shot up in the ranks. By mid-War, he was commanding the entire Southeastern Front, and would end up controlling several other fronts, including Stalingrad, and the Separate Coastal Army.
