      As I recall back in the 1700-1800s, mines were called torpedos ("Damn the torpedos..." and all)... so are we talking the 'modern' powered torpedo here?

      I seem to remember reading/seeing that the CSS Hunley had a 'torpedo' charge-on-a-stick, but nothing self-propelled.
