  • Siege of Rhodes(1480) Possibly the greatest military upset in world history

The Siege of Rhodes in 1480 was an attack by the ottoman empire against The Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem otherwise known as the Knights Hospitaller at the island of Rhodes. By 1453 The eastern Christian city of Constantinople had fell to the Ottomans under Mehmed II. This signifacnt loss by the Byzantines had opened up Europe to being taken over by the Ottoman forces.

By 1480 The Ottomans had intended to take Rhodes as a starting point to attack Rome itself. At Rhodes the Ottoman forces numbered 100,000 and would face off against a Catholic force of 600 Knights and 2000 soldiers.

Grand Master Pierre d'Aubusson(pictured in the attachment below) would have his hands full against great odds. But the Knights were used to having their backs against the wall..the order itself being founded in Palestine to administer medical work to Muslims and Catholics alike...chivalry and honor was a key value of the Order that would be seen in 1480. And so the battle began by the Ottomans firing over 3000 stones at the city with the stones weighing over 1000 pounds.. The Ottomans had the best siege equipment in the world at the time...Rhodes was under constant bombardment and its civilians in fear....finally a wall of the fortification fell and masses of Turks broke through.. but Pierre d'Aubusson himself though of older age and wounded... sought a brave counter attack leading Knights to charge the Turks shocking the Turks with great power and taking the Islamic banner.

The Siege of Rhodes was to be no Constantinople, and the Catholic forces had scored an incredible military achievement against the Ottomans. Sultan Mehmed II was said to have died a bitter man bc of not being able to overthrow a much smaller force of Knights at Rhodes. It would take over 30 years for the Ottomans to finally take Rhodes at a huge cost in military casualties , and by then Rome itself was stronger and able to preserve itself. The Knights success in 1480 was an important mark in history, for if the Order had failed all of Europe may have fallen to the Ottoman forces. Pierre d' Aubsson received a cardinals hat for his glorious victory and was hailed as the Shield of the Church.
