    I think he meant it. He claimed the French Crown through his mother, Isabella ( the 'she-wolf of France") as heir of her brother Charles IV. But the French barons didn't accept the principal of inheritance through the female line. It was the weavers of Flanders who persuaded Edward to push his claim after concluding a commercial treaty with England.

    Edward III , no less a warrior than his grandfather, took up arms accordingly
