    The S2/G2 is responsible for enemy, weather and terrain. The scope of enemy will be shaped in part depending on the level of force one is fighting, but in general terms, the intel officer knows enemy doctrine, personnel, force structure, weapons capabilities, logistical capabilities, identifies strengths and weaknesses, as well as vulnerabilities. The S2/G2 is responsible for collection management of information during operations to answer the commander's essential elements of information. With that body of information, the S2/G2 works with the G3 (and other staffs) to fashion courses of action for the commander. Ideally, the commander would want complete information on the enemy, but there will be analytical leaps to cover gaps--the experienced and successful commander can adjust off the mark as a situation develops.

    Thanks, ... interruptions kept me from making the follow on posts for this thread, and may continue to do so for a while.

    Another death in the family ...

    Intelligence ~ G2/S2 ~ Recce/Recon; Etc.

    So it's possible there may be a thread somewhere already addressing this subject, but I've yet to find it ...

    Key point and major focus here is that a "General"/"Decision Maker" can only be as effective and successful as the information/data* they had to start with, so if they have less than accurate/complete data on their opponent, they are likely to make a less effective and successful decision on Course of Action (CoA).

    That "Data" will break down to three major components/areas as I see it;
    1) Quantitative: Basic numbers of gear/kit; troop strength; land/territory held; and other physical matrix's ...
    2) Qualitative measures; such as troop training and capabilities, competency, efficiency, etc. ...
    3) Motivation (and Morale) ... how much enthusiasm will the enemy/troops apply to achieve their agenda/goals/targets vs. what your troops/people will apply ??? ...

    Now taking the above three break-downs/categories in to consideration, we are left with which should apply and how so when drafting Our counter-measures, and gauging where our Resources match up against those of our opponents ???

    Then next step being how to draft our strategy and operations to thwart those of the opponent such that we will prevail/win.

    FWIW, this thread is one of wide open subject and format, so any and all should feel free to inject their thoughts and ideas on the grander subject/scale presented here ...

    *Intelligence ~ Reconnaissance ~ Knowledge of Enemy quantity/quality/motivations/etc. ...
