Im interested to see if anyone has read this book. I've been looking into it. It seems good. Is it a book of politics or more fighting a actual war?

I first read this book soon after it came out-I was 12 or 13. It blew me away! the political content was stunning. I read it again about 5 years ago and It was still a good book but it didn't lay me out like it did the first time. Still, it's not a bad book. It's worth reading.

I have it but have never read it.

My favorite Vietnam novel is ''Sand in the Wind'', about the Marines in 1967/68.

      Well worth reading.

Much like the movie "Platoon" the story is told thru the experiences of the new guy to the platoon. I believe they called him "Cherry".

The book is fictional. It is, however, based on actual daily situation reports from an actual infantry company. Here's how it works: you read a chapter. at the end of the chapter is the actual historic map and sitrep. So if the sitrep listed something like "LIGHT CONTACT. 1WIA, 1KIA, 1KIA KCS" for that day then the chapter you read should have had 1 soldier being wounded, one soldier being killed as well as the Kit Carson Scout being killed.

the lieutenant is black and is writing some sort of thesis about race, politics and the war. throughout the book he develops this paper and towards the end he finishes it.

it is a unique read, to be sure.
