  • Lord Mayor retreats over Vietnam attack

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman has backed away from "offensive" comments he made attacking Labor politicians' participation in services commemorating the Vietnam War.

Cr Newman, an Army Reservist and ex-Army engineer, told last week's council meeting he found it "nauseating in the extreme" to see Labor politicians take part in services including Remembrance Day and Anzac Day.

"My own father (the late former federal minister Kevin Newman) was a Malayan emergency and Vietnam veteran, and I know who he objected to when he returned from the Vietnam conflict," he said.

"I know which political party organised the moratorium marches, were responsible for throwing paint on battalion soldiers marching through the streets of our capital cities, who threw eggs at them, called them 'baby killers'.

"It was the Australian Labor Party and their socialist alliance-type fellow preachers."

Cr Newman yesterday partially backed away from his comments but maintained they were a personal observation.

"It was a very personal, emotional comment that perhaps I shouldn't have made," he said.

"But I would say this: to anyone in the Labor Party over 50, can they stand up and say they didn't march?"

His attack attracted the ire of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia, with national president Ron Coxon rejecting their political content.

"I gotta say that being in the regular Army all through Vietnam and after I cannot remember ever talking about a political party," Mr Coxon said.

"I find his remarks a little bit offensive in that we as an organisation remain apolitical.

If he believes then he shouldn't have backed off. He should have stood on his principles.

On the other hand, who is to say that the labor party of today is not different from the one back then. Certainly the Democrats who got the US involved in Vietnam are different than the Democrats today and the Republican who ended the war was different from Republicans today.

Just more ugly politics at the expense of the Vietnam Vet.

Being an American all my life the history of Australia and it's current events are not well known to me. I have always respected the country, it's peoples cultures and the bravery of its troops. The Aussies I was around in 'Nam were a great group. It disappoints me to see that their Labour party imitated the yankee hippies. This type of callous and irreverent remark in the USA today would have thousands of calls for his dismissal. The major reason I think most people in the USA today show respect for the military troops whether they support the war in Iraq or not is because Vietnam veterans will not allow the shame shown again which we went through.

Very true TB, we do try our best to make sure the same does not happen to today's generation of soldiers that happened to us. Hopefully, our experiences with how we were treated have become known more fully as we vets tell our version of events. Maybe some have learned from our painful past. It's too bad some of our friends left us before seeing the change.
As for the Aussies, they deserved much better too.

Do you know what the proper abbreviation of the word "politician" is?

You nailed that one. Three little letters, so much meaning.
