Most Of Oily Substance Removed From Wall

Almost all of the oily substance that was splashed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in September has been removed, the National Park Service said yesterday.

Park Service spokesman Bill Line said 95 to 98 percent of the still-unidentified substance has been cleaned off. He said park experts think that deeper cleaning might damage the surface of the memorial and that sunlight will probably bleach out the faint remaining stains by spring.

Vietnam veterans are celebrating the black granite wall's 25th anniversary this weekend. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information on whoever was responsible for the vandalism.

I was thinking of doubling the reward if the guilty scum was handed over to a group VN war vets for a weekend of fun first

I did not see any of it yesterday.

If somebody could 'splain to my dumb self in detail how to put up pics I will put up some-past and present.

This is a photo of my son's reflection from The Wall a couple of days back. I did not see any staining or evidence of vandalism.

anyone who defaces a war memorial anywhere should be prosecuted to the full extent of any nations laws IMO ..

Are the names in any kind of order? It's obviously not alphabetical looking at that photo.

Imagine a ball of iron, the size of the sun. And once a year a tiny sparrow brushes its surface with the tip of its wing. And when that ball of iron, the size of the sun, is worn away to nothing, your punishment will barely have begun.

This is an absolutely disgraceful act. I hope whoever did this is caught and sent off for a very long time ... after being left in a room with some Vietnam era special forces vets for an hour or so.

Heres a little press release from the US Park Police with a phone number if anyone has any tips.

Edit: Doc, I believe the names are listed by the date that the particular person was KIA. I could be wrong though.

Yes, there is a specific order. From the middle of The Wall on the upper right side begins with the very first casualty name then the others are listed chronologically going east. This takes up about half the names. The other half begins on the west side and goes chronologically to the middle. I'm trying to down load a photo I took this week. It shows the date '1975' in the bottom middle on the left hand side. This would be the last name.

There are books at each end of the wall where you can look up names alphabetically. This book will tell you which 'tile' number you will need to look for and which line on the tile the name appears.
