  • Vietnam veterans pay tribute to fallen colleagues

    Posted Sat Aug 18, 2007 2:25pm AEST

Vietnam Veterans Day celebrations are continuing in Brisbane with scores of service men and women marching through the city's centre.

Fifty thousand Australian defence personnel served in Vietnam and 520 were killed in the conflict.

Today also marks the 41st anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan where 18 soldiers were killed.

Mark Minnell was in C Company Sixth Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment and says its a very significant day.

"Its very important because a lot of those killed I trained with and also the first person that was killed in the battalion was in my platoon, in C Company, so for the memory of all these people who we not only lost at Long Tan but were lost in the battalion on that first tour, 1966- 67," he said

Vietnam battle commemorated by NZ soldiers

    12:00PM Saturday August 18, 2007

Seven members of the Army's Artillery Regiment are in Canberra, taking part in commemorations of the 40th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.

Soldiers from 161 Battery, based at Linton, will join their Australian counterparts in a symbolic regimental fire mission and a parade through the streets of Canberra.

Long Tan was one of the most decisive battles of the Vietnam War. New Zealand artillery fire was used to help 250 Australian soldiers repel an attacking force of 1500 North Vietnamese.
