  • Forever young

Came across these photos, they belong to my wife Brenda.
Dieter Willery was a friend of both of us from our childhood. We were all from the same neighborhood gang of kids.We were living the"Westside Story",minus the dance and drama,on the near north side of Chicago back in the early 1960's.
Dieter always wore a sharkskin looking overcoat as most of us did back then.He was small, quiet and a fair baseball player.Brenda and him were friends before I met her. When she and I were at the Wall in DC last year she could not look at Dieter's name because"I dont talk to the dead".
Dieter died in Vietnam in 1969,he was 21.
Brenda has never spoke of him to me but she wanted to name one of our sons after him.I don't remember what my responds to that was,but it never happened.I regret that.
I post these pictures and words here as a tribute to him.I think he would have wanted to be remembered.
A life that should have been lived.

The history addict asked me,"Where did you fought?"
    Me...Damn..."I'm not sure."

Poignant story, Jerry. A life that should have been lived. I like that. Over 58,000 of those.
