  • They won't stop now...

Wot will we do when the Napoleonic Wars get air brushed from history!!!???

The long toll of the brave
    Is not lost in darkness
    Over the fruitful earth
    And athwart the seas
Hath passed the light of noble deeds
    Unquenchable forever.

I doubt that British military heroes will be taken out-at least I hope not.
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fate but strong in will
To strive to seek to find and not to yield.

A tough call. Even though I admit leaning one way I have a lot more questions than answers.

The big problem of course is that statues are meant to glorify or there would be no point in putting them up in the first place. It's more than just some artwork in a park.

Is there a time limit that should apply i.e. the person or event is well past anybodies living memory? Does anybody care anymore? Therefore maybe the statue is more of a reminder of history. A good example would be understanding why a jew would take offense to seeing statues glorifying some Nazi (regardless how great he was militarily) versus someone from 150 years or so ago as the arguments we now see in the southern states.

I need to think this through further but right now I personally would have no problem with someone's statue from 500 years ago regardless. Then again does that statue personify some current day issue. Could I put myself in someone else's shoes who would take offense? Demographics change. Colston would be a good example here. Seems like he was generous as far as the locals were concerned so they wouldn't have any complaints and therefore the statue remained for a number of years. Problem is now that area's demographics has changed (even the mayor is black). Why should blacks be ok with it?

I can't see the southern states remedying their race relations any time soon while some of those statues remain as is. The statues remained for years only because blacks were not allowed to voice their opinions on such matters until recently. It was a civil war after all and it would probably be a fair assumption that most southern blacks (i.e. slaves) weren't confederates. Maybe install a statue of MLK or Douglas beside that of Beauregard etc?

Should the eastern European countries remove statues of Russian WWII soldiers etc?

Should Wolfe's statue in Quebec be taken down?

The answer may be to move them to museums so it wouldn't be hiding from history but not be a daily reminder when one visited their local park.

Removing statues doesn't remove history. We still remember Adolf after all.

However, the potential act of removal can promote dialogue over whether we should do so or not.

This idiocy needs to stop, but it won't because it 'empowers' people and makes them feel good about themselves. It signals false virtue and is nothing more than a vain attempt to show the world how pure and moral their character supposedly is. Everyone seems to need someone to look down upon, otherwise how else would they be able to act sanctimoniously and know how great they were?

Just wait a few years and folks will be pulling down the names of anyone who smoked tobacco, drank alcohol, or (gasp!) ATE MEAT in their lifetime. Later on, they will denigrate anyone who used fossil fuel, just so that they can say 'we were holier than thou.'

These attacks on statues reflect a general attack on British (and American) culture. Picton is just part of this. It includes the attacks on Churchill statues, war memorials, attacks on Lincoln and Grant statues, attacks on Robert the Bruce statues, banning of 'inappropriate TV programmes. They even want to ban Swing Low Sweat Chariot now.
Much as it hurts I think the best response to these attacks is that of the French president Macron.

Impressive show of backbone and strength of character.

In response, the government banned police chokeholds
Now, if they only remember to ban criminals the same; maybe anyone using a chokehold should be charged with attempted murder.

Not a bad idea, come to think of it.

In nearby Boston there is a call by blacks and members of the clergy to remove a bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln in the act of actually freeing what looks like a black man. The fact that the statue of the black man is not standing and still has on his broken chains seems to some to be another image of degradation. "I don't think the black man should be kneeling and have chains on...", opined one person calling for the statue to be removed, "...take it down because it offends us."
The statue is merely an artistic interpretation. If you don't like it then produce one that seems more to your taste and then petition the city to erect it in a prominent place.

Choke holds are taught in Ju Jitsu and Judo. They are a useful means of subduing an opponent.
