  • Ireland 1798

A what if, say the French with the United Irishman gain the upper hand in Ireland in 1798, establish a sizable garrison, possibly a Naval squadron as well, posing a direct threat to mainland Britain, would this have caused the French revolutionary war to end with a French victory, or at best a ceasefire with Britain. Bringing about a independent Ireland in the process with the eventual French withdrawal, or would the French have kept their garrison in place. Would we have heard of Napoleon and if Napoleon did gain his ascendancy, would that independent Ireland have sided with an Imperial France, stretching British resources even more, even depriving the British army of some of it's famous Irish Regiments such as the 27th and the 88th foot.
