Please , can you tell how to get exactly an image of this quality ?
I have this image from " gallica.bnf.fr "
- Fort E. - Officier d'Ordonnance de l'Empereur - 1812 -
But 35.0 Ko and 512 x 729 pixels .
instead of your picture : 232 Ko - 1224 x 1280 pixels .
Do you know what is the file " *.highres "
on " gallica.bnf.fr " to download the pictures ?
Thank you very much for your answer .
You have to edit the image on Gallica.
Follow me step by step (this is my secret).
Take the same image as a sample... http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8426851j/f16.item
Step 1 - Click on the ZOOM icon/button on the upper left of the screen (located just bellow the beginning of the title of the book). After clicking on it, you will see a very small plate... That's OK.
Step 2 - Now, click on the icon/button represented by a MAGNIFYING GLASS WITH A PLUS SIGN (at the upper right-hand side of the screen). This is a zoom in function ("Outil d'agrandissement" in French). Click just one time!
Step 3 - To centralize the image, if necessary, you can move the image by double-clicking on the picture, holding and then dragging it in any direction (that's the way it works in a laptop).
Step 4 - Click on the button/icon that says "Selectionner l'outil Selection" (on the upper right of the screen). Click just one time on it! Now it's time to edit the image.
Step 5 - After step 4, by moving your cursor over the image, it will change to a cross. Select any point on the image and them double-click on it, hold and drag the cursor/cross to cut/edit the image. A message box will appear every time you release the cursor. You can continue editing your image by closing the message box/window (FERMER = CLOSE). Take a look at the small white squares on the borders of your editing... Double-click on any of them and drag it to enlarge your picture (move up, down, left or right).
When you are finally satisfied with your work, take a look at the bottom of the message box/window... You will see the following message:
Dans une résolution supérieure (format plus grand, meilleure lisibilité): Cliquez ici
Click on "Cliquez ici".
You will get a much larger image with much higher quality!
After getting the hang of it, you'll do this in no time.Last edited by Zouave; 17 Sep 12, 21:09.My avatar: Center of the Cross of the Légion d'honneur (Legion of Honour) of the First French Empire (Napoleonic Era), 3rd type (awarded between 1806-1808). My Légion d'honneur. :-)

From Pharaon to Zouave
Thank you very much for these detailed explanations really useful for me and probably for others. Now thanks to you I could have much better quality images on "gallica.bnf.fr", even if it is a little longer to do. But we can not keep all of the original image, because the dialog box says:
En français :
Exporter votre sélection
Votre sélection:

Utilisez ce code pour insérer cette image dans une page HTML:
Enregistrer:
Enregistrez votre sélection:
Dans la résolution choisie: Cliquez ici.
Dans une résolution supérieure (format plus grand, meilleure lisibilité): impossible, la sélection est trop grande.

Your selection:
Export:
Use this code to include this image in an HTML page:
register:
Save your selection:
In the selected resolution: Click here.
In a higher resolution (larger size, readability): impossible, the selection is too large.
close
* Then we found the image on the hard drive "C" with the name "export" (you can not choose the type of hard disk, or the name of the picture ?).
Do you have any idea what is the file type "*. Highres" on site "gallica.bnf.fr" to download the images? . Because with it you get a small picture unreadable.
Thanking you again, I send you my best regards.
Pharaon .

Btw... Sometimes, when editing the image, you'll get the following message: Dans une résolution supérieure (format plus grand, meilleure lisibilité): impossible, la sélection est trop grande.
In a higher resolution (larger size, readability): impossible, the selection is too large.
The solution: You need to down-size a bit your image (continue editing until the higher resolution option is made available again).
After clicking on "Cliquez ici (Click here)" to view my image, I open the larger image with my internet navigator (I'm using Firefox) and then save it on "My Images" using the "Saving as" function (naming the image as I see fit).
File Type? Sorry, I have no clue.
Hope this helps. My avatar: Center of the Cross of the Légion d'honneur (Legion of Honour) of the First French Empire (Napoleonic Era), 3rd type (awarded between 1806-1808). My Légion d'honneur. :-)
