Marshal Davout, "the iron marshal" his performance at Auerstadt was masterly.

Yes, Davout is the choice for me also. Auerstadt has already been mentioned and he was also undefeated in independent command. He was still holding on to Hamburg in 1814 when just about everyone else, including Napoleon, had surrendered.

Fine cavalry leader, Napoleon could have used him at Waterloo.
He performed a brilliant charge at Eylau, in the middle of a snowstorm that showed his instinct for battle.
Napoleon's verdict of Murat whilst at St Helena, was "he was only brave when confronted by the enemy, and then perhaps he was the bravest in the world.....but if he was placed in a council he was a poltroon with no judgment, and was quite incapable of making a decision. Murat's character however was nobler than Ney's, for he was generous and frank."

            1. Louis Davout.

            2. Jeanne Lannes ties with Louis Suchet.

            3. Andrea Massena ties with Nicolas Oudinot.

            4. Pierre Augerau ties with Eduoard Mortier.

            5. Michel Ney.

            6. Jean-Baptiste Bessieres.

            7. Joachim Murat.

pick any you like after them.

Murat was a political idiot; but a very bold and dashing and supremely brave one. His talents lie as a Commander of Cavalry and those qualities made him legendary. His vanity and ego were only exceeded , if then, by Ney.

Maybe we should add another category - the dullest?

I agree 100 % Centrix ! Murat was one and all guts, but little brains ! Ney is called the "Bravest of the brave" for reaching the main force of the retreating Grande Armée in Russia, after being cut off by the entire Russian army and that is certainly a great feat...but for the rest I find Ney's strategical and tactical exploits during the Napoleonic Wars mediocre !!!

Ney nor Murat would be ranked in my top 5 !
Instead I have the following on my list:

                          1. Davout
                          2. Lannes
                          3. Eugène de Beauharnais (Yes ! Suprise !!!!)
                          4. Poniatowski
                          5. Suchet

Why is Eugène forgotten every time?
His exploits during the whole Napoleonic campaign were much better then Murat's or Ney's, he was no political idiot like Murat, had brains and a sound tactical insight and he earned the respect of his men and...of all the Italians !

agreed bon ami, and a revised edition of my list:

                            1. Louis Davout.

                            2. Jeanne Lannes

                            3. Louis Suchet

                            4. Andrea Massena

                            5. Nicolas Oudinot

                            6. Pierre Augerau

                            7. Edouard Mortier

                            8. Michel Ney

                            9.. Jean-Baptiste Bessieres.

                            10. Joachim Murat.

would like like that if you took the 'ties' out....and I agree that 'Eugene was admirable. The politics perhaps cost this young man a baton.

                              Davout the best, easily.
Then Lannes/Massena--pick one or the other
                              4. Suchet
                              5.Bessieres

                              Grouchy the worst

Murat doesn't cut it as one of the best because he did not follow orders if he was not immediately with Napoleon
