  • Hey,

back with another question, this time its about the Royal Regiment of Horse Guards. Specifically its about the Helmet Crest of the Blues. In British Napoleonic Uniforms: A Complete Illustrated Guide to Uniforms, Facings and Lace by C. E. Franklin and multiple other paintings I've seen that their helmet crest was Blue and Red (for example that one waterloo page https://i.imgur.com/okhmVfh.png .) While in other paintings it appears to be black and red like. Does anybody know what coloring the helmet crest of the blues was?

    Cheers!

    • Black over Red crest.

Though Franklin's tome has inaccuracies, it is nevertheless an excellent attempt at covering what is probably an 'almost impossible subject to get accurate. It also didn't help with the selection of the printers in India.

      • Thank you! Wonder where the wrong Blue coloration comes from cause i've seen it quite often. Probably someone took the nickname "The Blues" too seriously hahaha

        • So I have a question regarding Russian Cuirassiers of the Military Order Regiment. The Officers wore a Helmet with the Order on it instead of the normal double headed eagle. Did the normal troopers also wear this helmet or did they have the normal Cuirassier helmet? The normal rank and file had normal Shabraques with the imperial Monogram while the officers had the Order on them so maybe the same thing is for the helmets?

          • have you looked in these books? There is a list of them which can be viewed. They are excellent though some are in black and white.

            • I actually do have some of them. The regulations sadly do not mention the Order emblem on the helmet 2 painting show the helmet with the order emblem and one of them with the double eagle. Really frustrating.

do you by chance have the Rousselot Plates for the Mamloukes of the Guard with text? Couldn‘t find it in the Best uniform thread

Rousselot didn't do a Mamalukes of the Guard plate. But what he did do was a set of six Soldats d'Autrefois

                • Thank you!

Another thing I'm wondering about. The Prussian Leib Husaren Regiment had according to Knötel a special Oilskin cover with their Skulls and Crossbones insignia on it, I thought it was only for the shako itself but seemingly it was also on their oilskin.

                  • Does anyone know how long the bearskin caps were used in the field for the Scots greys and Foot guard units? They ofc wore different uniforms in overseas deployment but there must be an enddate for when they stopped being part of the field uniform in „european“ service

would also be nice to know when the albert helmet was replaced in the cavalry

                    • Fur caps were ceremonial in the Guards, Grenadier Companies, Fusiliers and some bandsmen at this time, not worn in the field. The Scots Greys wore their Fur caps at Waterloo covered with a black oilskin. The Albert helmet was introduced in 1842-7 until 1871 when it was replaced by the similar pattern which is more or less what you see today being worn by the Household Cavalry.

                      • Well they also did wear their bearskins in the crimean war. They must've been changed to ceremonial dress sometime after that

                              • They both wore fur hats. If you do a bit of googling, you can find good early photographic evidence of their use in the Crimea. If you would like post-Waterloo, pre-Crimean schematic plates, I can post them
