  • Dazzle camouflage

A thread dedicated to, what I think, the coolest paint job ever, dazzling!

First lets start with non-military renditions. Look closely, they may be hidden the first time you see them.

Modern day warships painted in dazzle camouflage.
    HMS Belfast (C35)

    HMCS Sackville (K181)

    USS North Carolina (BB-55)

Admiral, "Who commissioned an abstract artist to paint the ships?"
Seaman, "He claimed it would make us invisible! Sir"
"We don't need to be visually invisible, we're dead meat if they enemy has radar."

MY Steve Irwin, also known as the flagship of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which fights illegal fishing.
      MY
      http://www.seashepherd.org/news-and-...-our-ship-1263
On July 15, 2011 the ship was held by the British Government due to a pending lawsuit by a Maltese fishing company.

...unless we post a bond for USD$1,411,692.87, the Steve Irwin will be held indefinitely and possibly sold.
RV Farley Mowat, a long-range, ice class, heavy-duty conservation ship sold to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, seized by the Canadians in 2008 and sold to a company in Oregon refitting it for oceanic research.

        Origin of the name.
        http://www.gotouring.com/razzledazzl...es/dazzle.html
The British called this camouflage scheme "Dazzle Painting." The Americans called it "Razzle Dazzle."

The primary goal of dazzle painting was to confuse the U-boat commander who was trying to observe the course and speed of his target

I had a hard time looking at them as well...imagine how it would be through a periscope (in the case of the ships, I mean)!

ESSEX-class fast carriers lined up in "Murderer's Row" at Ulithi in December of 1944. Front to rear in dazzle camouflage are WASP (CV-18), YORKTOWN (CV-10), HORNET (CV-12), HANCOCK (CV-19), TICONDEROGA (CV-14) and LEXINGTON (CV-16) in overall Navy Blue bringing up the rear.

Points for anyone who can name the escorting ships in dazzle.

                    That dazzle must be good!

                    It's a P51A, with the Allison V-1710 engine

My bad, I am not an expert on WW2 planes, but I had completely missed the under-fuselage scoop thingy that obviously means its a P-51.

They spent their 1st cruise on the way to the Pacific together in these schemes...

                            USS Missouri

                            USS Alaska

USS Missouri & USS Alaska at Norfolk before their 1st cruise to the Pacific.

The schemes did cover even topsides of both vessels.
