  • Virtual Reality therapy to treat PTSD

I'm reading an article about pilot studies where virtual reality is used to treat PTSD. According to the study, 8-16 sessions improved patients' symptoms by 15-67 percent. The treatment involves patients being exposed to the stimuli that causes fear, but in a virtual and safe setting (i.e. a virtual Fallujah).

The original article was posted in the Scientific American in August 2004. According to the current article, by Nikolas Westerhoff, the USN is currently testing further treatment.

Sounds cool- do you have a link?

The main problem with PTSD is not with treating, IMHO (I'm not saying that's not important) but in identifying cases.

I'd also like to see the link.

        Try this

But it only offers a partial article. Supposedly, VR is being researched to help burn victims as well, making their treatments less painful.

I would curious to see what kind of head way they make with this type of treatment. I'm not so sure immersing myself into the nightmare world I was in for some time, is a good idea?! I'm stable now, but slide from time to time. I'm just not sure this is for PTSD.

I certainly thought it was counterintuitive to put anyone back in the situations they were in. I guess it's sort of a systematic desensitization to lower the level of reaction. There was also a section that discussed VR therapy for burn patients to put them in a calming and cool environment while their injuries were treated.

Well maybe for burn patients, it might make sense. But to a soldier or lawman etc put back into the situations that burned into their memories, their waking and sleeping world, finally the very fibre of their beings.....................I don't want to be there and you won't be catching me strapping in for the ride. It took me long enough to get free of all the freakin' drugs they had me on........

Sorry about that, Kendoka Girl, it's been one of those weeks. I do know you mean well pointing this treatment out....Thanks, Bob

No problem, Bob. I was sent somewhere and it screwed with my head for a while, so I totally understand and empathize.

My heart reaches out to you and I pray for your healing.

These days, if it bugs me at all, like this week, it always just seems to manifest itself in a rising anger, and it came and went when typing in that last response. It seemed like I was unloading on you and I didn't want you to think that.

For starters I don't know you nor you me. But I get the feeling you've had some experience yourself or with someone close. Maybe sometime I'll give you the brief lowdown, but not today.

                  Thanks again, Alice, Bob Out

Oddly enough there is an article about this in the Quantico newspaper this week. They're using paintball to get these guys' heads straight again and the success is phenonamal.

Discovery Channel had a show on video games and part of it involved this research. Quite interesting.
If you can't set a good example, be a glaring warning.

You mean between the local newspaper and ACG? Not through me, there isn't. I think we both just have good info.
