I would say get the British Politicians to spend more money there, instead of using it to cut money. Too long the guys in Parliament have been downsizing the Army. Consolidation of Regiments has created new entities no one knows or feel ties to to. The Regiment in the Army is the primary instrument.

It seems that just a while back they decided to cut back on Scottish Regiments.

      Coincidence?

Maybe they should promise ipods to all new recruits....

Shoot Gordon brown about ten years ago? It might not have helped but it couldn't have been any worse.

That would be one way to avoid the problem but doesn't make it go away.

                Not That simple.

Granted withdrawing from Iraq would free up about a third of the army, however the main damage is down to the lack of funding and the conditions soldiers have to put up with at the moment, not so much the Ops. the other Problem is the tempo of the ops, which withdrawing from one or more missions would relive.

Add to that we can win in AFG, and having a current and running operation is good for the army. People attempting to join will know they most likely will be heading out on active duty, means that people are less likely to join up as an easy option, much like happened in the US forces up to 1990, and many other European armies are suffering now. The above linked to the actual experience on ground means you get a better fighting force. Prior to AFG we had northern Ireland to serve the role of combat posting.

If I had my way I'd get out of Iraq as that isn't winnable and was done on a rather suspect premise. However AFG Is winnable (It's only that we bowed to political pressure), and can provide a healthy army, if linked to proper funding.
