Yesterday an active duty Infantry Captain, a retired Infantry Gunner, a retired Artillery SNCO, and I were at The Basic School (TBS), specifically in the Training Set Forward Observer building.

The Captain was signing out three laptops for a demonstration that he will be doing for the Commandant. So the four of us were informally discussing the current state of simulation & modeling in the USMC. There was a knock on the door so I opened it and a young woman in civilian clothes walks in. She had just graduated TBS and she was looking for additional FO training before she reported to her MOS school; Fort Sill.

Within 2 weeks of the SecDef order about opening the Combat Arms to women.......we had a Female Marine with orders to become an Artillery Officer.

Did you take her out to the range and see if she could lift the 155 shells first?

Social experiments don't belong in uniforms.

Because women belong in the kitchen and bed room? If she can and wants to do the job then she should be allowed to do it.

This happened at the TSFO.....strictly modeling & simulation. She wanted to run various FO missions; grid, shift from a known point, polar...

            No field work.

No this is about being able to accomplish the mission, no need to bring sexist stereotypes into the discussion.

Gotcha. Well that should be easy then.

Isn't that SOP for all second lieutenants? At least for the ones who want to live to become first lieutenants...

Exactly, how many guys showed up and asked for the same?
                        My worst jump story:
My 13th jump was on the 13th day of the month, aircraft number 013.
As recorded on my DA Form 1307 Individual Jump Log.
                        No lie.

My PL did. Between ROTC graduation and his BOLC start date he had about a 6 month gap. Almost every day he would show up at the unit for at least an hour to talk about signal, how the equipment worked, and how we fit in the brigade. When we went to AT instead of hiding behind the CO's legs he went with me to be an off site node OIC. He and I talked several times a week on the phone about the unit, the mission, the men, the equipment. He's at BOLC now and we still talk at least once a week, text daily, etc. I've been very spoiled by him and he made me realize how much I had been missing for the previous 3 years by not having an officer in my platoon.
