  • Need Help with something I found

My wife was helping with some Boy Scout activities at the base of Lookout Mountain here in Chattanooga & found something interesting on the school grounds. Check out these pics & tell me if these are solid shot cannonballs. It is clearly marked with a "6 lb" notation. Does anyone know if solid shots were stamped with the weight on them or is this something completely different?

I'm thinking it is a shotput Hellboy. Our school's are stamped in an identical manner. The oxidation/oxidization doesn't seem enough for something that old either.

Yeah, I was thinking it might be something like that.

Hellboy said they were found on a school ground. At 6 pound, I'd say they were primary of Middle School kids.

HB. I have to agree it is a shot put. Before high school I trained with 6 and 8 pounders, identical to the one you found.

I've always wondered how shot put came about. I think I know now.

"My goodness the cannon is broke and the enemy is coming!"

"Here; take these cannon balls and THROW them at the enemy!"

Eagles may fly; but weasels aren't sucked into jet engines!

Nah! It is much older than that! It all started when caveman Og told caveman Zot that he could throw a big rock further and was willing to bet a piece of burned mammoth on the outcome!
