  • A Defense of McClellan at Antietam

Steven Stotelmyer is quite well versed on Antietam. I listened to the talk especially the discussion of the Lost Order. Mr. Stotelmyer site a number of items to downplay their importance. He however does not, repeat not, place much if any importance on 'lil Mac's own statements and telegrams at the time.

Mac stated, "Here is a paper with which, if I cannot whip Bobby Lee, I will be willing to go home."

He also gives no credence to his telegram to Lincoln.

    "HEADQUARTERS,
    Frederick, September 13, 1862--12 M (Received 2.35 a.m., September 14.)

    The PRESDT,

I have the whole rebel force in front of me, but am confident and no time shall be lost. I have a difficult task to perform, but with God's blessing will accomplish it. I think Lee has made a gross mistake and that he will be severely punished for it. The army is in motion as rapidly as possible. I hope for a great success if the plans of the rebels remain unchanged. We have possession of Catoctin. I have all the plans of the rebels, and will catch them in their own trap if my men are equal to the emergency. I now feel that I can count on them as of old. All forces of Pennsylvania should be placed to co-operate at Chambersburg. My respects to Mrs. Lincoln. Received most enthusiastically by the ladies. Will send you trophies. All well, and with God's blessing will accomplish it.

    Geo. B. McClellan"

There are other reasons justifying his post battle delay, especially lack of supply intentionally caused by Stanton. To this I would say, the ANV was certainly worse off in supplies and anything else needed, yet it didn't slow them down.

I bought and read the book and was not impressed.
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fate but strong in will
To strive to seek to find and not to yield.

Haven't read the book. Hearing the talk was enough.
