I saw that on the news online. I had no idea there was anyone left affected from the era.
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fate but strong in will
To strive to seek to find and not to yield.

A few years before retirement I took part in a Civil War seminar where participants wrote biographies of CW soldiers using pension files from the National Archives. We each pulled about half a dozen names at random, selecting the best story we found in those files. I was denied access to one I asked for because it was still active.

It wasn't at all uncommon for aged vets to seek young brides at that time. They received care in their old age, and their wives received a guaranteed income. Offspring also were covered under the military pension.

      Dennis
