Did the South write a new constitution or if not did it write any new ammendments to the original Constitution? If it did neither was that by desire or lack of time to frame new legislation?

It wrote a new constitution, which was very, very close to the U.S. Constitution, but for making slavery legal and a few other points.

Thanks for that, made an interesting.Wonder why they decided to ban the importation of slaves though as it seems to unermine the(iniqutous) institution?

The US Constitution banned the importation of slaves after 1807 (as I recall). Given that the Royal Navy had shut down the African slave trade, it may not have been seen as being worth the possible provocation of Great Britain by allowing the importation.

The cynic might argue that the importation of chattel slaves would decrease the value of the slaves already in bondage.

Right on the money Guthrieba. They amount of increase in slaves was due more to the fact that they had so many around, there was no need to import anymore. Nonetheless, there were some within the Confederacy advocating going back to that.....which would have put them in direct confrontation with Britain-which was yet another motive for not doing so while the war was to be won.

The original CSA Constitution is housed at the University of Georgia in the Hargrett Rare book room. They wheel it out once a year to show it off.

IF your have corn growing in your own garden you don't have to import it from else where. By 1807 the slave population of the US reproduced enough to have no need for imported slaves.
