  • Colorized Civil War Photos

Was browsing through Civil War photos when I stumbled across these at the Civil War Talk Forum.

These are done by a user called Zuzah. He has done a great job.

A couple of these look familiar, but most don't! Good find!

Nice photos. Thanks. I see that Lee had really small feet.

Great attempt at colouring these figures from past. They look a little Cadaver like though. You could try using more than one facial tone, perhaps up to 4 starting with a base tone and building up the darker skin tones with more of a red hue. Here is a useful link to help with that image-restore.co.uk/blog/colourising-or-tinting-an-old-photo-part-1/ It will help improve the realism of your colouring and make them look more alive.

I didn't do these myself. Zuzah at the Civil War Talk Forum did. I thought these were great and some people at the forum here might appreciate them.

Pretty cool... do you have a source for them?

                Oh... I see it now.

                My worst jump story:
My 13th jump was on the 13th day of the month, aircraft number 013.
As recorded on my DA Form 1307 Individual Jump Log.
                No lie.

I enjoyed them tremendously, but if I had ONE complaint it was the uniforms (in the group photos) all seem to be 'perfect' with no fading, etc. But they are very well done.

This image is the one I am thinking of.

There are a few portraits Zuzah did that where he brought out dust that was on the Uniform and made it visible. Valid criticism, but still better for visual representation than Black and White.

The Grant Photograph gives me chills.

I did say IF I had a criticism. But honestly only photo that didn't give me the chills was the Confederate dead. Knowing the dead was staged for the photo in the first place meant that coloring it did not improve my opinion of it. If it had been made to shock the public with the images of war; I might have felt differently. But, IIRC, it was taken more in a carnival atmosphere at the showing. 'Hey look, dead Southerners!!' But if I am wrong on that; I will gladly change my opinion when proven.

My understanding of the photo is that these particular men in question were lined for a burial when the photograph was snapped. I am not 100% sure, and you are right many photographs were staged, including the famous dead rebel sharpshooter at the Devil's Den by Gardner.

Hi there. I appreciate the kind words, and I love that you like my work, feel free to post it wherever you may please, don't fear on that front, but please do me one favor - don't share my old images. I'm kidding, you can do what you please, just I have improved a lot since then. A whole lot. Once I get 5 posts, I'll show my entire gallery and a couple of my favorites.
