General Arnold did use his personal credit with Quebec Merchants to buy supplies for his troops. Congress gave him a lot of trouble about paying for it.

Arnold did get into trouble money-wise. He was court-martialed for graft at one time and his wife also had expensive tastes.
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fate but strong in will
To strive to seek to find and not to yield.
