I hate to sound so uninformed but can someone tell me if the medals given out for the Olympics are solid metal or plated? Those gold medals are pretty damn big and if solid, then must be worth a coupla bucks. How heavy are they anyway? Just wondering..

The specifics of the construction of the medals is left to the host nation, but there are minimum requirements:

Gold and silver medals are 92.5% silver.

Gold medals must be plated with at least 6 grams of gold.

The Bronze medals are made of, well, bronze

All Olympic medals must be at least 3 mm thick and at least 60 mm in diameter.

What might be interesting is that the each medal at Vancouver is unique and includes a portion of two larger pieces. The ones for the Olympic games depict an Orca and the ones for the paralympic games depict a Raven.

Did you think that it was solid gold?

          Check the gold prices out.

$1118 per ounce. Big bucks for any Olympic award. Even if it's only gold plated it is still worth a couple $K.
