  • NFL Draft Thread

Since the combine is under way, its time. Lots of fans of different teams here, so why don't we start by discussing our favorites moves so far and needs.

    STEELERS:

    UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS:

    Casey Smith/NT, Jeff Reed/K, Ryan Clark/S

    NEED:

D-line: sewed up Casey Hampton to remove immediate stress at nose tackle and Aaron Smith is completely healthy. Unless Ziggy Hood is a complete bust this is now lower priority.

K: Reed is franchised. I don't think anyone, well, maybe Al Davis or Dan Snyder, is dumb enough to give up 2 #1s to sign a free agent kicker. Reed is among the best, if not the best, on field goals. Perhaps a longer kick off specialist is needed though.

DB: Absent signing Clark they may want to look at safeties, especially if their opinion is the kid from WV can't cut it as a starter. Was last year an aberration at corner? Maybe not. Look for people who can cover and catch, not just run fast! Second priority.

ILB: IMO, it should be their third priority. Age is a factor here.

Running back: They have a short shelf life on the whole. I'm also not sold on Mendenhall from the ears up. Fourth priority.

O-line: Roethlisberger has to take the blame for some of the sacks, but far too many were caused by a complete inability to protect. Priority one at all positions, especially left tackle. IMO Starks should change his last name to Sieve!

    Regards,
    Dennis

I can't wait for another poster to reply. The Redskins spent over $100 million on a defensive tackle. They are rumored to be interested in Peppers, though he will in all likelyhood go to the Bears for similar money, but they don't have an NFL calibre QUARTERBACK! I hereby nominate Daniel Snyder as the dumbest creature on only two legs!

As Bugs Bunny would say, "What a maroon!"

The Falcons made a great pickup in Dunta Robinson. Now the whole Falcon draft needs change. Still if a good DB falls into their lap I'd think the Falcons would still need to draft him, But my money is on Witherspoon from Missouri.
Eagles may fly; but weasels aren't sucked into jet engines!

The Dolphins made a major move bringing in Karlos Dansby, which shores up a huge hole in the middle. In my view, the following are the next areas to be shorn up

OLB - The release of Joey Porter was necessary, but now finding his replacement is paramount. There is a lot of speculation about drafting Sergio Kindle out of Texas. Brandon Graham from Michigan is also mentioned. If past history is any guide, and the Dolphins do indeed go for an OLB in the first round, look for them to take the kid from Michigan. Parcells loves Michigan players for some reason.

NT - Jason Ferguson is old and coming off a serious injury. Paul Soliai hasn't looked like the answer as a replacement. If it were me, I'd look for at this position very hard and look for a free agent or, if there is value at 12 (like Dan Williams from Tennessee), I'd take a NT. Otherwise, I'd might try and move down a bit and select someone like Brian Price. The NT is the key position in the 3-4, and without a good one, the ILBs can be seriously exposed. Still, Parcells and co love to draft LBs, so I assume this would mean LB before NT.

Safety - Yeremiah Bell made the Pro Bowl last year and is a solid guy against the run. The other starter, Gabril Wilson, was released. The Dolphins have two young guys, but I'm not sure if the organization sees them as the answer. I suspect a safety will be drafted.

WR - A bigtime playmaker is a real area of need. I don't see Parcells drafting a wideout very high though. One thing on my mind is the fact that the Phins brought back Chad Pennington as a back-up. That signals to me that they might be thinking of moving Pat White outside. He's electrifying, so maybe the Phins already have an answer on the roster.

I think White is an excellent option at wideout. I'd be concerned about injury with him though. He seems to be one of those players prone to them.

There always seems to be wideouts. Enough that, if I'm a GM, I don't see making the position a draft, and especially not a free agent, priority.

            Hello Dennis.
            And good morning.
            Excellent thread idea.
            I have always loved football.
            Great game.
My interest in Pro-Football goes back to when the Jet's won Superbowl III. 1968 or 1969???
I enjoy combining the past with the present.
For example: The Baltimore Colts have potential, but seem to be fading.
I know they were just in the Super Bowl, but they seem to be fading.
I'm a Raider Fan and a Ram fan.
            Now I'm depressed.

The NT postion just took on a higher priority. Jason Ferguson was just suspended for 8 games due to a PED violation.

Did you see the hit that knocked White out in week 17? It was pretty vicious. Still, given his slight frame, I tend to agree he might have frailty issues.

The Free Agency market seems to be unusally active this year. Wonder what impact it will have on the draft.

A major impact. For example the Falcons will not, probably, take a DB in the first round with the signing of Dunta Robinson. My bigger question is how will these mega-contracts fare when a cap is restored?

I'm now thinking Bradford may be picked by the Rams as the first pick.

They very well might. If they rate Bradford even with Suh or McCoy, they've got to take the qb - unless they can convince Washington to come up and get him.

The Steelers might want to think about a quarterback. Big Ben might be spending some time as a guest of the State of Georgia if the allegations out there have any merit.

                            Probably.

With the Browns obtaining Seneca Wallace, a career backup in Seattle, and having 11 draft picks, 9 in the first 5 rounds, I booking my reservations to the Super Bowl. Holmgren will lead us to the promised land!

Is he bringing Ron Wolfe out of retirement?
