  • RIP Gordie Howe

The greatest (by far) hockey player of all time has died. I was fortunate to see him once in his prime. My dad took me to the old Olympia to see the Wings play the St Louis Blues. It was so long ago that Al Arbour was still playing defense for the Blues.

Back in the day my buds and I would go over to the old Boston Garden on Saturday afternoon when ¨da Broons¨ were in town. For $2 we could see all the greats of the day, Johnny MacKenzie, Bucyk, Cheevers, Sanderson, Doak..all those guys. But the best was when the Wings came to town. Gordie Howe played RW and the fights were gloves off and no holds barred. The refs would just let them go at each other until they had to stop to keep the ice from melting.
A tough week for us old guys who remember when...

The thing that made Gordie so great was that he could play all facets of the game. He never needed an enforcer to protect him; he did it himself.

I wonder if he threw St Peter an elbow when he was going through the Pearly Gates?

                RIP Gordie.
