Branch Rickey wanted to sign Monte Irvin to the Dodgers at the end of World War 2 but Monte turned him down because he had been in the military and didn't feel he would be ready for the upcoming baseball season. Rickey signed Jackie Robinson a couple of weeks later and the rest is history.
